san diego

went to visit daniel in san diego! unfortunately i got sick the day before i flew down there so i was feeling a little funky the whole time (just a cold, don't worry, no scary throat collapse emergency room visits).
he picked me up from the airport thursday night and promptly took me to his favorite bar, appropriately named "the hole." they boast a "cheers" type of atmosphere, and i can't say they are too far off. at least on thursday night. might be a little harder to know everyone's name on a sunday afternoon, i hear that when the place gets nuts. then to bourbon street...eek. daniel almost had to dance on the bar in his undies, we snuck out of there quick and went to another bar...the lancer? then i was tired and we went home for bed.
friday went out to torrey pines, completely out of the loop and unaware that the buick invitational starring tiger woods was happening there. we just wanted to hike (walk), but there were crazy golf fans everywhere. we walked around the trails and bluffs and through a little hobbit trail and up to the highest point of the park...a whopping 17 or so stairs up. daniel thought it was half dome all over again! we drove around fiesta island just for fun, it was weird out there...kind of creeped me out. then lunch at whole foods where i got a $1.20 burrito (whoopsie, somebody forgot to reset the tare on the scale), and then home for a nap after our strenuous hike. then we went to see The Orphanage, it was awesome and creepy and daniel screamed like a girl. then to the top of the park for a drink, and to another bar, i can't remember what it was...then tried to go to the gaslamp but got annoyed with parking, then to another bar just because we really had to pee...that one was cool though, it had a big balcony out back with lights and fountains. it was really pretty and then a plane flew past us about 20 feet from our heads! it's crazy how that airport is right in the middle of town. then home, tired.
saturday got up and explored presidio park, that park is rad. we found a big statue commemorating the mormon battalion, it was awkwardly hidden in a corner of the park, the man was carrying the book of mormon and a gun. then we went to old town, lots of people dressed up as pioneers and singing folk music...turned out there was a mormon battalion commemoration festival going on! woohoo! good thing i said no when daniel asked me to straddle a cannon for a picture.
then to the thrift store. then to daniel's friend's house for mimosas and reading magazines while he got a massage. dinner at my new favorite restaurant, ranchos in north park, mmmmmmm. veggie mexican. i was feeling pretty crappy that night so i asked daniel if we could just stay in and eat ice cream and watch movies, he was nice and let me have my evening in. chocolate sorbet, The Ten (a funny and ridiculous movie by The State folks), cold meds, and i was out by 10pm. sunday morning got up and went to coronado to walk on the beach and see the pretty hotel. met up with nick and bo for lunch (i made them go to rancho's again because i'm the only decisive one and that's the only restaurant i know). it was awesome. again.
i miss daniel already.
summary: daniel knows lots of bars. everywhere we went he ran into people he knew. there are way too many cars in san diego. parking is terrible, maybe even worse than san francisco in some areas, even with the evocation of the spirit of doris day.
at the airport i found out pretty much all travel between san diego and the bay area was canceled or delayed. how the heck does the rest of the country fly in snow and ice and we can't manage to get through a little rain? ugh. anyway, my 3:00 flight turned into a 7:20 flight, but at least i got home. flying congested was more painful than i imagined it would be. i was half deaf when we landed, i think i'm at about 75% of normal now.

hello again

went to the cabin for lori's birthday last weekend, thanks lori and brandon for the hospitality!! i think everyone came home a little bruised and battered. hint: snow and ice are not ideal conditions for skateboarding.
here's a little of what we did:
we watched crow bowl
we played 31
adam doodled
the boys hugged a lot

a time series plot, partially distorted for effect:
adam-sled delta=0.0 feet
adam-sled delta = 0.0 feet
adam-sled delta = 3.5 feet
adam-sled delta = 20+ feet
steve's angel snow man seconds before it's demise

stay classy, dennis

only a few people know about my love for dennis richmond. i've liked him as long as i can remember. something about the guy, much the same as david letterman, just gave me a really good feeling. i read he's retiring in may. i guess that's fair, he's almost 65, but i'm still bummed. i'll miss the guy. the end of an era...
they're going to have a heck of a time replacing him. at least in my eyes.

watch out valley dwellers, you could be next.

this hurts my heart.
welcome to my world for 7 months. but that's not the big easy, and i fear it will happen in california long before we're prepared for it.

boring again...

spent christmas day riding around with ryan in the morning. haven't been to NAS alameda since 2004 when i was working on remedial investigations, feasibility studies, engineering assessment/cost evaluations, RACER estimates, data gap analyses, TPH studies, RODS....ahh, the good old days sitting kitty corner to jen.

OU2B site 3 for life!!

hungry for late breakfast, ry and i decided it was a feliz navidad and that tostadas were in order. we made it happen thanks to safeway ALWAYS being open. we had kimchi for an appetizer. a culinarily multi-cultural christmas.

then we went to ptown. i fell down a little bit while i was running up the stairs with my bike, but the bruises and vampire bite holes in my leg were totally worth it becasue we caught the train. i went to christmas dinner at the lazarotti's. we ate, we drank, we laughed, we marched, and all the grandkids got some "dolla"s.

saw juno last week, it was super cute. i thought i was going to love it. within the first 15 seconds of actual dialog i was worried i was going to hate it. the annoying teenager language stopped being so annoying and i ended up liking the cute story.

hung out with leslie and company last weekend. went to 3 bars in one night. the third was so bad leslie and i ended up just leaving the and company there. though i did get to enter the bar via a death defying slide...weee.

went for a nice hike up by bolinas with co and company. there were waterfalls. with all the rain we got this week i bet the falls are way cooler now, i'd like to go back. and then we went to burma superstar!!! mmmm. i'm ready to go back there too, whenever anyone wants.

new years was mellow.

deliberated this week and finished up today!! trial over! jury duty over! woohoo! back to normal life! back to waking up super early! back to a new job and a new boss and some scary new projects! woohoo!

and did everyone see chuck norris standing behind huckabee at the iowa caucus last night!? i feel like i don't have a choice but to vote for huckabee now...if i want to live past november 4. careful guys. chuck norris KNOWS who you vote for. but i don't want to live in a country that has huckabee for president. hmm. face chuck norris, or move to canada? might be canada, see you guys later.
