fin

gwen has been in the best mood for weeks. she's been smiling and happy and full of compliments. she's been bringing me beans every monday, making them spicier and spicier trying to test my strength (i've ruined her belief that little white girls can't handle spicy food). it has been so fun.
and today, the end.
she's been yelling for 35 minutes. getting more shrill by the second.
plus she walked past me, stopped dead in her tracks, turned, and came back to me just to tell me she didn't like my shoes.
compliments from gwen are so nice. criticisms i completely ignore.

weekend workout

i had a fun and busy weekend but i didn't even take my camera out of the bag. dang it. sorry.
flat tire on the way to sc friday night, patched with medical tape (no joke!) and got on our way.
moved boxes and boxes and bins and laundry baskets and bags and furniture and bikes, plus some scrubbing and rearranging all day saturday to get friends into their new house. around 7 pm one of them mentioned that if i planned on seriously running the race on sunday, that i really should be taking it easy....oh yeah, should have thought of that earlier. guess we'll just see how it goes...

turns out i'm so tough that all the moving strain didn't even phase me! i ran wharf to wharf in less than 50 minutes!
don't know my actual time because i'm not sure exactly when i crossed the start line, but i ran hard and fast (for me) and it was super fun. 15,000 people is a nasty crowd to force your way through, people were not lined up according to their pace, it was really frustrating in the first few miles. i was too short to see the extent of the crowd, but i bet it looked pretty incredible. there were bands all along the route, and people cheering and spraying us with hoses, it was tons of fun and if i remember to sign up before it fills up next year i'll definitely try to run it again, even faster!
bridget spotted me at the starting line, i chased her for a while, but she's so fast and nimble i couldn't keep up through the crowd for long. i think she finished in about 45 minutes. wow. colette and clay ran it too, they were awesome and had fun. we'll be out there again for sure.
and we ate at dharma's twice! mmmmmmcoconuttapiocammmmm.
pinecrest this weekend!! i'll for sure take pictures, i know reading without pictures is a bore.

the hughes'

met up with billy and sheryl for lunchtime fun at the buena vista, they're in town for a navy reunion with billy's parents.
irish coffees with tradition all around, last time they did this they ended up with a lot of free drinks and drunk by noon.
ruby and paul
john
claire
sheryl (think she cheated, mustache is way too good)
billy and me (sheryl totally thought this picture was clear!!)
me and sheryl
billy's id...so good. the lady at dmv asked if there was something wrong with his eye, ha! some kids never grow up.

and....
a little someone special showed up in ready made. interesting i had to hear about it in an anonymous mass text message! sneaky sneaky, rach.
and this made me happy when i walked in to tj's (co, pass on to brie)

race

yesterday morning i was running on polk street, up those few nasty blocks between the water and lombard. there was an older person in front of me a couple blocks, couldn't tell if it was a guy or a girl, just had a big crazy grey fro. i caught up at the crest of the hill and saw it was a lady. i felt like passing her might be kind of a jerk move, so i stayed behind her for a bit....she totally started trying to race me! she kept going faster and faster, this hasn't happened to me before, i know i'm not fast, so i'm not really competitive with my running. but i was annoyed that she was getting all racy. so i showed her what's up, i blew past without looking back. take that, lady. i might be a jerk, but she totally started it.

tri for fun!

before we get down to this triathlon business, let me share with you a photograph of a photograph. my favorite picture that sits on my desk at work. this shares a frame with taxi and a late llama friend.

ok, the here we go. marissa, ryan, and i were at shadowcliffs at 6:15am on saturday for some mini-triathlon fun.
ry and maris (girls gone wild!)
hahahahahahaha (this is even more ridiculous big!)
i think there were about 1,000 people participating, plus fans to cheer us on.
it was chilly, but eventually we stopped being wimps and stripped down to our suits. i was afraid the water was going to be cold, it was warmer than the air. i hadn't been in pool since april, so i was a little worried about the swimming. the swimming ended up being super easy, except for all those other bodies in the water. i couldn't swim freestyle because there were arms and legs flailing everywhere and i was afraid i'd get kicked in the face. ended up swimming breast stroke pretty much the whole distance, a bit slower but safer. i'll have to work on this if i do another tri. then onto the bike, the ride was easy, no wind, closed road, easy course with a couple little hills. i think all three of us had the same goal on the bike: don't let anyone on a mountain bike pass you. in fact if there's a mountain bike in front of you, pass it. we all survived, no cramps, no crashes. then the run. my legs forgot how! i took two steps and rolled my ankle. common for me, my ankles are rubber, but still. i figured i'd get my running legs back after a few minutes, but nope, they were off the whole run. i was slow and awkward for the part of the race i thought would be cake. another note for future tri training: practice transitions!
in fact, another note for future tri training: train!
we signed up for this about 1.5 weeks in advance, i don't think any of us trained, i know i didn't. so go us for being in generally good shape to begin with!

marissa crossing the finish line! (she really finished in 1:30, we were in the 4th wave, 15 minutes later than the clock)
i know it's totally dorky, but my enormous forehead always burns so i have to cover it up

as if that wasn't enough for the day, ry and i also gave blood....and then i became the shine shuffle board champ (solo and doubles with marissa). good times.

oh yeah

i think i forgot to mention that i'm doing my first triathlon this weekend.
i roped marissa and ryan into it with me (not very difficult, i mentioned it, they responded with exclamation marks), we all signed up with about a week and half notice....training? what training? we don't need no stinking training.
i run every day. i "bike" every day (a 4-mile round trip commute isn't exactly biking). i swim once a year. we'll see how this goes. think good thoughts for us saturday morning!

ugh

perfectly nice cute boy on the bus tonight talked to me for a bit and then asked if i wanted to get coffee sometime. i hesitated (and maybe made my wallace and grommit face, i hope not). he said never mind. then started talking about monster energy drinks.
iamsuchadork.

thief!

every day i go outside and there are more missing.
stop picking my flowers!
and my pretty, new (to me) bed frame. thanks to keath for helping me get it out here!

thursday

at the co-op today, stocking up on my bulk items, i overheard a conversation between one of the employees (whose name i hope is trevor, for not so obvious reasons, but i'm typing my internal monologue so there you have it) and the older blind man he was helping with the bulk goods.
trevor was talking about what i thought was a trip he had planned. savvy little world traveling hipster that he is, trevor was heading to belize. the older man continued to inquire, his line of questioning a little stronger than polite grocery store banter, more like "what is this crazy kid thinking?"
turns out trevor is moving to belize, with his wife/gf, and they are going to build a tree house bed and breakfast. sounds pretty sweet, yeah?
he continues "our goal is to have no affiliation whatsoever with this nation."
hm. a little pretentious. and unrealistic considering a large chunk of the tourists who will be hitting up a belize tree house b&b will likely be american. but it gets a little better. the old man asks what else they plan to do while they're there....
trevor and his wife/gf "will probably travel a lot to europe."
wow trev, europe, that's fanfrickintastic. way to escape the consumerism.
i accidentally laughed out loud and, having reached my pretentious hipster MCL, quickly made my way to the produce.

in all my consumer glory:
i finally fixed (hopefully) my leaky kitchen sink. i've had a bowl under there for a while because i'm not so plumbing savvy but it wasn't a big enough deal to call for help. turns out i'm plumbing savvy enough. yay independence.

at our HOA meeting this week we talked about our roof deck plans. we are ready to go, and our goal is to have it built in time for fleet week! i'm stoked. get ready for a roof deck warming party!

oh snap!

so, the neighbors thoroughly scrubbed the grill, now i feel a little bit guilty rather than a lot grossed out. oh well, all is good and i am a happy griller again.
dinner tonight, grilled pizza with caramelized onions, mushrooms, squash, and vegan monterey jack cheese.
and for dessert, grilled plantains.
mmmmm.mmm.
i also hung lights in my back yard a few weeks ago.
ryan was supposed to come over for dinner with me tonight, he flaked but i cooked without him. bummer ry!

train and meat

went to sac for the 4th, it was nice and hot up there.
i forgot to bring my camera with me to the pool party, so the only pictures i have are from the train ride. dang.
here's the sac river on my there
went to a party at my old friend (and coworker) cathy's house, it was fun splashing and playing with kids and old friends. brad and kendra were there with their new baby girl abbey, miss holly was in attendance, jen and vince and isaiah, sarah and dave...good times.
then i went watch the calexpo fireworks with ryan, they were good and we sang along to whitney's star spangled banner to show off our spirited americanism.
went for a little bike ride with the bossi's on saturday, ryan came over and we all hung out in the sweltering back yard and bbq'd.
here's isaiah playing the piano, this boy is way too cute.
good times. then rode back to the train station to head back to the bay.
here's the sunset on my way home i like the train.

what i came home to was not so much good times: meat. on my veggie grill.
went out back this morning to check on my grill because i want to grill a pizza tonight, looky what i found:
a little bit closer now
yeah
hmm. though these tasty nuggets are resting happily on my vegetable tray, they do not appear to be of vegetable origin. and if i could post a smell, it would be a meaty one. bummer. i sent an email to the neighbors, hopefully this won't happen again.
